FPP UPM organises a Poetry Reading Night, giving students the experience of performing poetry.

 

 

SERDANG - In conjunction with the Teacher's Day celebration, Bachelor of Malay Language Education students, Faculty of Education Studies (FPP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organised a Poetry Reading Night programme to provide students with the experience of organising a poetry performance.

This programme was led by Dr. Shamsudin Othman, Head of the Department of Language and Humanities Education (JPBK) and assisted by JPBK lecturers and faculty support staff. Also involved in the implementation of this program are students of the Bachelor of Malay Language Education with honors from the Keris Mas cohort and several 1st year students of the Bachelor of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) with honors.

Programme head, Dr. Shamsudin Othman said, by practicing a creative method in performing poetry can actually attract the interest of the younger generation to deepen their understanding of Malay poetry.

"When poetry is performed, it can enhance the creativity in the delivery of Malay language teaching, and this technique is also an initiative to preserve the art of the nation's heritage itself," he said.

He added that the programme also gave space and opportunity to students in the selection of teacher-themed poems in conjunction with the celebration of Teacher's Day on May 16 every year.

A Masters student specialising in Malay language, Saiful Ibrahim Abas Saiful Bahri said, this programme highlights the students’ talents and the bravery in handling and managing the programme involving national literary figures.

"I have gained a lot of knowledge, especially related to the various genres of poetry. This programme can also promote the teaching profession through the expression of poetry," he said.

Also present at this programme was the 15th Sasterawan Negara Prof. Datuk Dr. Rahman Shaari, Senator Prof, Datuk Seri Awang Sariyan, King of Asian Poetry Roslan Madun, Sani Sudin of Kopratasa and the Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Marzuki Wan Jaafar.
