COMMUNITY WELFARE PROJECT (PROKEMAS) 2025 EMPOWERING THE BESWOK INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY

SUNGAI SIPUT, 20 December 2025 – The Faculty of Education Studies (FPP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) continues to strengthen its role in the university's volunteer core through the organization of the Community Wellbeing Project (PROKEMAS) 2025 in Kampung Orang Asli Beswok, Sungai Siput, Perak. This program organized by the Faculty of Education Studies Representative Council focuses on improving community well-being in terms of education, health, cleanliness and basic needs.

A total of 38 students from the Faculty of Education Studies were directly involved in this program. The journey to Kampung Beswok was challenging when participants had to take a lorry from Kampung Bawong due to the narrow road conditions and unsuitable for buses. However, these constraints did not discourage the volunteers from serving the rural community.

The program, which lasted for two days on 20 and 21 December 2025, was implemented with the permission and cooperation of the Orang Asli Development Department (JAKOA). Various high-impact activities were implemented collaboratively with the local community to ensure that the real needs of the residents could be met effectively.

Among the main contents of PROKEMAS 2025 is a visit to the cocoa plantation which is one of the main economic sources for the residents of Kampung Beswok in addition to ecotourism activities. This program also features an Education Literacy Slot which focuses on the basic 3M skills (reading, writing and arithmetic) as an initial step to identify the level of literacy among indigenous children in the village.
In the evening, the Bullying Prevention Character Formation Slot was implemented with secondary school students from Kampung Beswok. This slot aims to raise awareness among teenagers on the increasingly worrying issue of bullying as well as to form values of empathy, respect and a positive self-image.

The second day of the program continued with the Titipan Budi Slot, which is the closing ceremony of PROKEMAS 2025 which was officiated by YBrs. Dr. Nor Azni Abdul Aziz, Deputy Dean of Academics, Students and Alumni, Faculty of Educational Studies. During the ceremony, villagers received donations of basic necessities from various parties including members of the Faculty of Educational Studies, the Food Bank Malaysia Foundation and Global Future Leader, which were welcomed with gratitude by the local community.

Also held was the Healthy Menu Demo Slot conducted by Puan Noorizajune Abu Bakar, Chief Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Educational Studies, together with villagers. This activity aimed to provide exposure on preparing healthy menus using easily available ingredients. This program was followed by mutual cooperation activities around the village area which successfully created a cleaner, more comfortable and conducive environment.

According to the Director of the PROKEMAS 2025 Program, Nur Amirah binti Isahak, the organization of this program not only benefits the community, but also becomes a meaningful learning field for students. “PROKEMAS 2025 is an important platform for students to approach the Orang Asli community directly, understand the real challenges of life in the interior and contribute energy and knowledge sincerely. The involvement of all parties proves that the spirit of volunteerism can be a catalyst for positive social change,” she said.

He also expressed his highest appreciation and gratitude to the management of the Faculty of Educational Studies, JAKOA, lecturers, students, strategic partners and all contributors who have provided commitment and strong support in making PROKEMAS 2025 a success.

Overall, the Community Wellbeing Project (PROKEMAS) 2025 has shown strong synergy between the university and the local orang asli community. This program not only has a positive impact on the residents of Kampung Orang Asli Beswok, but also contributes to the formation of identity, social empathy and leadership values among students. This initiative is in line with UPM's aspirations as a knowledge institution committed to driving social change based on volunteerism, well-being and development of rural communities, in line with the motto "UPM Berilmu dan Berbakti."
