Master of Education Guidance and Counselling and Master of Science Guidance and Counselling

Master of Education Guidance and Counselling and Master of Science Guidance and Counselling programmes offered at UPM are the pioneers of counselling programmes in Malaysia. The curriculum structure is based on the Counsellor Training Standards and Qualifications by the Board of Counsellors (Malaysia). For both programmes, students can register full-time or part-time by completing a total of 51 hours of course credits for the Master of Education Guidance and Counselling; and 58 hours for Master of Science Guidance and Counselling which include practicum, internship and dissertation/thesis within the stipulated time. Both programmes will train students to become counsellors in various government and private settings including schools, community agencies or higher education institutions. All academic staff are registered counsellors with certificates of practice, and have extensive expertise in their respective areas of interest.

Educational Objectives of the Program

The aim of the program with the proposed renaming that is Master Counseling is to produce:

  1. Professional counselors who are knowledgeable in a variety of employment settings;
  2. Professional counselors who are skilled and highly skilled in developing the community through creative and innovative practices;
  3. Credible professional counselors conduct research and development in the field of counseling in various settings.

Ph.D. in Guidance and Counselling

Ph.D. Guidance and Counselling offered at UPM is a pioneer of the highest level of study in the field of guidance and counselling in Malaysia. This programme is also recognized by the Board of Counsellors (Malaysia). For this programme, students are required to complete the minimum course credits of 10 hours and a thesis. This programme will prepare students to become expert counsellors and highly-skilled researchers with various specialized expertise in the field of guidance and counselling.

Program Non-Graduating

Non-Graduating Programme is a platform to add knowledge or complement the specific requirements of individuals to meet the Counsellor Training Standards and Qualifications by the Board of Counsellors (Malaysia). Students must pass by obtaining at least grade B for a registered course. The requirements for admission into this programme are, must be a Malaysian citizen and submit a letter for additional course/s required from the Board of Counselors (Malaysia).
