Background JPKPK

The Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology (JPKPK) is one of the six departments in the Faculty of Educational Studies. Started to stand on its own on May 1, 2004. The original entity of this department is the Guidance and Counseling Unit under the Department of Education (1979-2002) and the Department of Human Behavior and Movement (June 2002 - April 2004). This department strives towards excellence in teaching, research, consultancy and development services in the field of guidance and counselling. This department has operated the Bachelor of Guidance and Counseling Education program since 1981 and is the first program offered in Malaysia in this field.

This department carries out three main functions:

• Teaching
• Research
• Consulting and development services

TEACHING

JPKPK offers academic programs at bachelor and graduate levels.

Bachelor Program

  • The Bachelor of Guidance and Counseling Education with Honors program provides students with skills as counselors in various contexts of employment situations and is highly relevant to current needs.
  • Bachelor of Counseling Program with Honours


Graduate Program
The graduate programs offered are:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) (Guidance and Counseling)
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) (Guidance and Counseling)
  • Master of Education (M.Ed.) (Guidance and Counseling)

Doctor of Philosophy
Ph.D. program (Guidance and Counseling) offers specializations such as counselor education and counseling supervision, family counseling, career counseling, school counseling, substance abuse counseling, cross-cultural counseling, group counseling and so on. Students are required to complete the coursework and dissertation for the Ph.D program. The preparation of this course work can help students master a certain field of knowledge more deeply.

Master of Science (M.Sc.)
Students who follow the M.Sc. (Guidance and Counselling) need to follow coursework and thesis.

Master of Education (M.Ed.)
Students who follow the M.Ed program. (Guidance and Counselling) on the other hand need to follow the coursework and sit a comprehensive exam and complete the dissertation.

 

Professional Recognition
All programs offered by JPKPK meet the standards of the Board of Counselors. Graduates who follow this program have sufficient qualifications to be recognized as registered counsellors.

 

RESEARCH

Research is one of the main activities of the department. Specific areas studied include counselor education, counseling supervision, career counseling, school counseling, employee and organizational counseling, family counseling, group counseling, multicultural counseling, substance abuse counseling, parent counseling consultation, technology in guidance and counseling services, testing and assessment in counseling, personnel management and research on theories and theories with elements of Islamic spirituality.

 

CONSULTING AND DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

The department is very active in providing consulting and development services. Among the agencies involved are the Malaysian Ministry of Education, the Malaysian Public Service Department, the Language and Library Council, the Board of Counselors (Malaysia), the National Anti-Drug Agency, PERKAMA International, the State Bureau, the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), the Internal Revenue Board State, National Taxation Academy, Malaysian Social Institute and so on.

The department also has a Community Counseling Clinic which aims to help students and staff of Universiti Putra Malaysia in terms of well-being in various aspects of mental health.

 

TEACHING AND LEARNING FACILITIES

JPKPK has individual, group, and family counseling laboratories and testing and evaluation to train potential counselors.
