COMPOST FERTILIZER PRODUCTION FROM MUSHROOM BLOCKS AND FOOD WASTE STRENGTHENS SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS

SERDANG, May 15, 2026 – The Department of Professional Advancement and Continuing Education (JPPPL), Faculty of Educational Studies (FPP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organized a Compost Fertilizer Production Program from Mushroom Blocks and Food Waste at the JPPPL Agricultural Site, Block H, UPM.
This program involved the participation of members of the PESUMA Agropreneur Squad along with visually impaired participants in an effort to strengthen awareness of sustainable agricultural practices and environmentally friendly organic waste management.
The training was conducted by Mr. Uzaini Mohammad Yusof, Assistant Agricultural Officer, Faculty of Education, who shared knowledge and skills related to composting techniques using recycled materials such as mushroom blocks, dried leaves, and domestic food waste.

Throughout the training session, participants were exposed to practical compost preparation methods, including techniques for arranging organic materials, forming compost layers, moisture control, and appropriate covering methods to accelerate the natural decomposition process. This hands-on learning approach provides participants with the opportunity to understand the concept of a circular economy and the importance of sustainable waste management in daily life.
According to the Director of the Inclusive Agro Community Project, Associate Professor Dr. Nor Wahiza binti Abdul Wahat, programs like this not only enhance knowledge about sustainable agriculture but also serve as a platform for inclusive community development that encourages active involvement of students and the disabled community in the field of agropreneurship.
He also emphasized that the experiential learning approach can foster social awareness, a spirit of volunteerism, and participants' human skills, while supporting the university's sustainability agenda and strengthening a culture of quality work and a conducive environment in line with the implementation of EKSA in the faculty.
The organization of this program is expected to serve as a catalyst for fostering sustainable waste management practices, thereby strengthening UPM's commitment to promoting an inclusive agro-community, environmental sustainability, and societal well-being.
